Synthetic diamond is a promising
material for friction-free artificial hips, knees, and other joints.

The doctors white coat could soon
be recharging her wireless tablet PC and other portable electronic devices,
eliminating the risks and hassle of battery drain.

Diamond Joints

Orthopedics company Biomet and synthetic diamond maker Diamicron will jointly
develop and distribute total hip replacements using Diamicrons synthetic
diamond where the joints in artificial hips, knees, and implants meet. It is an
alternative bearing technology to the cobalt/chromium or ceramic materials
currently used to make the ball, and metal-backed polyethylene to make the
socket, of artificial hip replacements.

The diamond-on-diamond technology is years away from market, according to a
Biomet spokeswoman, but promises longer-lasting and more frictionless joints.

Solar Fabrics

The US Army is enthusiastic about a lightweight, durable fabric with thin
solar panels integrated into its surface. An tent made of the fabric can
generate up to 1 kilowatt of electricity for lighting, ventilation,
communications, GPS systems, computers, and to charge batteries. Joining several
tents together increases the power flow output. Iowa Thin Film Technologies has
completed three tent prototypes for the Army and orders already are coming in,
according to a company spokesman quoted in an AP newswire.

Future possibilities include weaving the solar panels into military uniforms
and into civilian tents and clothing. It could have a very beneficial impact in
the Third World as a source of power for water, refrigeration, lighting, and
education.
